Quis ut Deus
Patron Saint of the Fallschirmjäger
Michael is a question that is also an answer. Anyone who knows him knows why the Fallschirmjäger (German paratroopers) claim him as their patron saint.
What the name means
Mikael is Hebrew: "Who is like God?" Not a rhetorical question. The name is a statement. The answer is already in it: nobody. Quis ut Deus is the Latin form of that name.
In Christian belief Michael is one of the archangels. He leads the hosts of God. In the Book of Revelation he is the one who throws Lucifer out of heaven. He is not the angel of peace but the angel of war, in the service of an order he holds to be right.
Michael as patron saint of soldiers
The veneration of Michael as a patron saint of soldiers runs through the whole of Christian military history. He is almost always shown with sword and armour, often with a foot on the fallen Lucifer. Not a gentle image. An image of victory.
Many armies and units have taken him as their patron. He stands for the soldier who fights when it is necessary, and who knows what he is fighting for.
Why the Fallschirmjäger
The paratroopers have their own bond with Michael. Once you jump, waiting is no longer an option. The situation is what it is, the decision has been made. What is left is what you brought with you.
Michael fits this branch: not the saint of caution, but the saint of resolve. And like the Fallschirmjäger, he comes from above.
Airborne units around the world carry him as an insignia or patron. In the German Army he has been tied to the branch for decades: on badges, in chapels, in the traditions of the units.
The design
The patch and the flag show Michael with a raised sword and the Latin lettering beneath. The classic depiction, printed on Flecktarn (the German Army camouflage pattern). Not an invented image, but a visual language that stands in the tradition of the branch and is recognised there.
The lasercut patch is limited to 30 pieces. The flag to 30. No more will be printed.
